The Clean Water Act sets out a framework for source
protection planning on a watershed basis. A watershed is
an area of land that is drained by a river and its
tributaries into a body of water such as a lake or
river. A watershed, and the water in it, may cross
township, provincial and even national boundaries.
Under the Act, Source Protection Areas are
established based on the watershed boundaries of
Ontario’s 36 Conservation Authorities. These
conservation authorities, as watershed managers, are collecting information that will be used in
the source protection planning process and work with the
Source Protection Committee to facilitate the
development of Source Protection Plans. The Upper
Thames River, Lower Thames Valley and St. Clair Region
Conservation Authorities have entered into a partnership
for this region. The Thames-Sydenham and Region is made
up of the watersheds of these three Conservation
Authorities.
